Policy CNA-R: Student Activities Transportation (Regulations)

Student Activities Transportation (Regulations)

Authorized school transportation will be provided all students participating in activities that represent the Oologah- Talala Public Schools. This transportation will generally be without charge to individual students except in special situations. All participating students shall travel to and from the activities by means of the transportation so provided with possible exceptions as provided below.

Athletic Contests

A school bus will be the primary means of transportation to all athletic contests except when the size of the group dictates otherwise. Any other means of transportation must be sanctioned by the principal and have the approval of the superintendent prior to departure. The respective coach (es) will be in charge of all athletic trips and responsible for the conduct of the students making the trip.

  1. Athletes

All participating athletes shall ride the bus, or other authorized transportation, to and from the contest with the following exceptions:

    1. An athlete may be permitted to ride to and from a contest with his/her parents or another adult only upon written permission of the principal after approval of the coach. The principal may issue such permission only upon a written request of a parent and the approval of the coach. Such written request shall contain a statement releasing the school district of any liability connected with the specified transportation. Such permission must be granted prior to the departure.
    2. A parent may seek the permission of a coach to bring a student home from a contest. Such permission may be granted by the coach only to the parent. In all cases, the coach's decision will be final.

In no case will an athlete be permitted to ride to or from a contest with another student or driver not previously approved.

  2. Cheerleaders

All participating cheerleaders shall travel to and from contests by means of (1) the pep club bus, if one is taken; (2) on the athletic bus; or (3) other school-authorized transportation, with such exceptions as the following:

    1. A cheerleader may be permitted to travel to and from contests with his/her parents or another adult only upon written permission of the principal and consent of the sponsor. The principal may issue such permission only upon a written request of a parent. Such request shall include a statement releasing the school district from any liability connected with the specified transportation. Such permission must be granted prior to departure.
    2. A parent may seek the permission of the cheerleader sponsor, or the coach in charge if the sponsor is not at the contest, to bring a cheerleader home from a contest. Such permission may be granted by the sponsor, or the coach, only to the parent. In all cases, the sponsor's, or coach's, decision will be final.

In no case will a cheerleader be permitted to ride to or from a contest with another student or driver not previously approved.

Whenever riding the athletic bus without the sponsor, cheerleaders will be under the direct control of the coach in charge. The coach will not be responsible for the cheerleaders while at the contest. Therefore, it is expected that they will conduct themselves, at all times, as young ladies and gentlemen representing the Oologah-Talala Public Schools.

Other School Activities

All other school activities requiring travel to and from such activities shall be governed by the same rules and regulations as set forth above.

Parent Knowledge/Consent

All trips taken by the students under the sponsorship of the school shall be preceded by a knowledge and consent form signed by a parent or guardian. Regularly scheduled athletic contests should not necessitate a form for each game as long as parents have a schedule of the games.

  1. The consent form will be developed by the administration and will contain the dates, times, and destination of trips, mode of travel, sponsor(s), name and telephone number of hotel or other residence if an overnight trip, arrangement for meals, parent consent statement and release of liability for other than negligence on the school's part, etc. (Such form should provide explicit information for parents and release the school of unnecessary liability.)
  2. The sponsor(s) will be responsible for obtaining signed consent forms for each student and submitting them to the principal prior to departure.
  3. A copy of the rules, regulations, and expectations for students making school-sponsored trips will be supplied to the students' parents.

This policy is subject to change based on statutory amendments and Board resolution. Always refer to the most recent official record.
