Policy DPBA: Substitute Teachers Duties

Substitute Teachers Duties

It is hoped that substitute teachers will make every effort to perform, as nearly as possibly, the full duties of the regular teacher. Simply keeping order (baby sitting) will not be considered sufficient. Except in instances where emergency does not permit, outlines and plans are to be made available to the substitute teacher. These plans are to have been made by the regular teacher. Class rolls, grade books and seating charts, if used, should always be available for the substitute. The principal will check to ascertain that the teacher has made these items available and will provide the substitute with schedules and information concerning routine procedures.

Some minimal expectations of a substitute teacher include the following:

  1. Follow, as nearly as possible, the plans left by the regular teacher.
  2. Maintain control in the classroom. Utilize the principal's office to handle any exceptional discipline problem.
  3. Use any free time to review and prepare for subsequent classes.
  4. Carry out any extra assignments to which the regular teacher may be assigned that day.
  5. Do not fail to ask questions whenever there is doubt about any situation.
  6. Substitutes are expected to maintain complete confidentiality of students' grades, records, etc. Any comments concerning the classroom or the regular teacher should be made to the principal or superintendent, not the community.
  7. Whenever the situation permits, the substitutes are expected to be present at the school during the same hours as the regular teachers.
  8. Substitutes are expected to report to the building principal the regular teacher's failure to provide the necessary items.
  9. The principal will make periodic reports to the superintendent concerning the effectiveness of substitute teachers.

This policy is subject to change based on statutory amendments and Board resolution. Always refer to the most recent official record.
