OSDE Fitness Assessment Guidelines
Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, Oklahoma public schools will implement the Presidential Fitness Test as established by 70 O.S. § 11-103.9c (OSCN 2026). The assessment measures students’ strength, endurance, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Students in grades 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 11, as well as secondary students who participate in OSSAA-sanctioned activities during the school day, are required to complete activities in each of the following categories: cardiorespiratory endurance (one-mile run or 20-meter Beep Test), core and abdominal strength (curl-ups or plank), upper body strength (right-angle push-ups or pull-ups), and flexibility (sit-and-reach and trunk lift). For body composition, student height and weight will also be recorded.
Oklahoma’s vision for fitness assessment emphasizes personal progress, confidence, and lifelong physical activity, focusing on helping students recognize their strengths and set personal goals rather than compare their performance with others. The Oklahoma State Department of Education will provide guidance and training for school personnel, with accommodations and exemptions available for students with qualifying disabilities or medical conditions.
Parents and legal guardians have the right to opt their student out of the assessment by filling out the OTPS Fitness Opt-Out Form 2026-27 and turning it in to your student’s school. This form is only good for the 2026-27 school year. Additional forms will be available each year.
Our district will follow state guidelines when administering the assessment. More information is available on the OSDE website under Physical Education Resources, as well as at this link: OSDE Fitness Assessment Guidelines.
